If the service takes place at Mariä Himmelfahrt, the tribute usually goes to the church rather than to the family’s home; confirm the time with whoever is arranging it. For a service at Johanneskirche, ask which entrance is used for flowers and how early a tribute should be there. For a service at Michaeliskirche, ask whether the flowers should be there before the family arrives, and where in the church they are placed. For German gift-giving, a funeral wreath or arrangement may carry a Schleife, a printed ribbon naming the mourner; if you want a ribbon, specify the requested wording when discussing the tribute, including the names of those sending it. When deciding on the flowers, chrysanthemums, white lilies and white roses are customary choices for funeral flowers; use the occasion and the family’s preferences to guide the choice of tribute, and check the selected product for the flowers it includes. In practical terms, a Grabgesteck may be placed on a grave for Totensonntag and, in Catholic states, for Allerheiligen; for a tribute intended for a grave, ask the cemetery about the precise location and its arrangements for accepting flowers.
