Bouquets are built from what came in fresh that morning, so if a particular flower isn't in, the florist swaps it for one of equal or greater value that keeps the same look. If the date is the thing that matters, pick any future delivery date at checkout instead — the safer option around a busy period, and the calendar only offers dates that are genuinely available. A date you are able to select is a date a florist will work.
Addresses in Spain run to a five-digit postcode before the town, the first two digits being the province — for example, 28013 Madrid. Getting those five digits right settles the province before anything else happens. Include the recipient's local phone number as well: florists use it to confirm availability and the exact address, and it is often what turns a doubtful delivery into a completed one. Apartment deliveries often need a door code, so add it at checkout instead of hoping a neighbour buzzes the driver in.
Over 900 gifts are ready to send, and over 500 of them are flowers. Bouquets tend to be rounded and tightly built, in strong saturated colour, more structured and formal than a loose garden style — hand-tied and wrapped in printed paper with a ribbon, often finished in cellophane, and boxed arrangements are common for gifting. Eucalyptus, ruscus, pittosporum, asparagus plumosus, aspidistra and olive branches carry the greenery. Production in Andalusia and the Canary Islands appears to run close to year-round under plastic, widest from spring to early autumn, with winter demand and the November peak topped up from the Dutch auctions and from Colombian and Ecuadorian imports. Alongside the flowers there are plants, chocolates, wine, champagne, preserved roses and over 60 cakes.
Cut flowers come off the Cádiz coast around Chipiona, the Canary Islands on Tenerife and La Palma, El Maresme in Barcelona province, the Valencia and Alicante coast and the Costa de Granada and Almería, with carnations, roses, chrysanthemums, gerberas, lilies, strelitzia and lisianthus among the stems. Wholesale trade moves through Mercabarna-Flor in Barcelona, the flower pavilion at Mercamadrid and the auction at Chipiona. Red carnations are strongly identified with Spain and given far more freely than in northern Europe, including between men. Chrysanthemums, though, read as funeral and cemetery flowers and are avoided as a gift for the living, especially around 1 November. Flowers are also given for a saint's day, the onomástica, as well as for a birthday.
Mother's Day (Día de la Madre), the first Sunday of May, Valentine's Day (San Valentín) on 14 February and Father's Day (Día del Padre) on 19 March are the exception to the usual schedule — florists open for the big flower days, so your order can arrive even when the date falls on a Sunday. Around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, order at least 48 hours ahead. On 23 April in Catalonia a single rose is given, traditionally paired with a book, for the Diada de Sant Jordi. All Saints' Day (Día de Todos los Santos), 1 November, is the largest flower-buying day of the year. During Holy Week (Semana Santa), the week before Easter Sunday, processional floats are dressed with carnations, lilies and orchids.
Someone mid-journey — at an airport, railway station or cruise terminal — is almost impossible to reach with a delivery, so send to their hotel, office or home address instead, timed for after they arrive. If the recipient isn't home, the florist typically calls them or arranges redelivery. Funerals follow their own forms: standing wreaths, coronas, and easel sprays on stands are what is sent to the tanatorio, the funeral home, while centros, wide flat-based arrangements, are placed on or beside the coffin, and a printed ribbon or banda carrying the sender's name or company is standard on a wreath. White and cream lilies, calla lilies and gladioli are the usual palette. Wreaths and formal funeral pieces need 24–48 hours' notice.
You order online from wherever you are, and the arrangement is made and delivered locally. Pay in the currency you hold — the order is placed and settled online. Write a card message at checkout and it travels with the flowers, free and exactly as you typed it; on a gift sent from abroad that card is the whole of your presence in the room. Bringing flowers to a host is polite but less expected than wine, pastries or a dessert, which is worth knowing if the delivery is standing in for you at a dinner.
